The Garden
We are planting a huge garden where we hope to grow a ton of veggies. I say “hope” because there are boatload of variables we’re dealing with:
This land was formerly farmed, but it hasn’t been farmed recently. In the meantime, the weeds took over. Digging them out has so far been a constant battle and almost full-time occupation. Obviously, we are not using any herbicides in the garden. Sometimes I wish I could 😂.
There is already evidence of insect damage to our pea plants. Even so, they very quickly have provided our first harvest of the year!
We installed a fence to try to keep the deer at bay. In the meantime, less that 48 hours after planting, somebody (some critter) ate two of our tomato plants.
We are counting on the “Back to Eden” gardening method to alleviate much of the need for watering and fertilizing. But we have no idea if it will work.
Next steps:
Continue digging out weeds.
Consider reinforcing the fence with some kind of wire.
Research natural, safe insect and critter repellant methods. We are already planting companion plants in the garden (marigolds, herbs, etc.) as part of this effort.
If you have advice, please contact us. We’d love to hear from you!
